Robotic knee replacement uses a surgeon-supervised robotic system to plan the operation from 3D imaging and to place the implant accurately. This guide explains how active, semi-active and navigated systems differ, whether robotic surgery is better than conventional surgery, and how recovery and long-term results compare. Dr. Sushil Sharma offers robotic-assisted knee replacement with the CUVIS robotic system at Kailash Hospital & Heart Institute, Noida. For the service itself, see the main robotic joint replacement page.

What is robotic knee replacement?
Robotic knee replacement uses a robotic system to plan the operation from 3D imaging and to help prepare the bone and position the implant accurately. Systems differ: in passive or semi-active systems the surgeon guides the cutting tool within limits set by the plan, while in an active system the robotic arm carries out the planned bone cuts automatically under the surgeon’s supervision. With every type, the surgeon plans the operation, supervises each step and can stop or change the plan. Dr. Sharma offers robotic-assisted knee replacement with the CUVIS system at Kailash Hospital & Heart Institute, Noida, described on the robotic joint replacement page.
Is robotic knee replacement better than conventional surgery?
Robotic assistance is designed to improve the accuracy of implant positioning. Whether that leads to better long-term results than conventional surgery is still being studied, and the surgeon’s skill and experience matter at least as much as the technology. A consultation will show which approach suits your knee.
What does “fully active” robotic knee replacement mean?
In navigated (passive) surgery, sensors track the knee and show the surgeon where to cut, but the surgeon makes the cuts by hand. In semi-active systems the surgeon moves the cutting tool and the robot keeps it inside the planned boundaries. In a fully active system, once the plan is set, the robotic arm performs the bone cutting automatically while the surgeon supervises and can stop it at any time. Dr. Sharma uses the CUVIS system, a fully active system, for robotic knee replacement at Kailash Hospital & Heart Institute, Noida. No type of robot has been proven to give better long-term results than another, and the surgeon’s experience still matters most.
What is the difference in recovery and long-term results between robotic and conventional knee replacement?
In simple terms, robotic surgery aims to place the implant more precisely and to disturb less soft tissue. Some studies show slightly less early pain and quicker early walking, but most patients recover over a similar timeline of weeks to months with either method. For long-term results, studies so far show similar implant survival and function, and the robotic technique is newer, so 15 to 20 year data are still being collected. The clearest proven benefit is more accurate alignment. Surgeon experience and good rehabilitation matter as much as the method.
What is minimally invasive knee replacement?
It uses a smaller incision and aims to disturb less muscle and soft tissue, which can mean less early pain and quicker walking for suitable patients. It is not right for every knee, for example some with severe deformity, so the approach is chosen after examining you.
